If you are in the UK as an immigrant looking to settle, as a Student, Graduate, or a dependent, the NHS remains one of the best places work and grow in the UK.

Despite changes in immigration and pay rules, the NHS continues to offer structure, training, and sponsorship for those who show commitment and reliability. Across England and Scotland, hospitals and community trusts are still recruiting Healthcare Support Workers and Assistant Practitioners to fill vital gaps in care. Band 3 roles often meet sponsorship levels, especially in major cities with their weighting or unsocial hours payments.

Why you must get into the NHS

Salary and work balance: The NHS is one of the highest paying employers in the UK and also has the best work/life balance. You will usually work 3 days a week and rest the rest of the week, or engage in other activities of your choice.

Job Security: The NHS is one of the UK’s most stable employers. Healthcare jobs are protected even when the economy changes.

Clear Pathway: You can start in Band 2, gain your Care Certificate, and progress to Band 3 or higher within a year.

Training & Sponsorship: Trusts value UK-based workers who already have experience and can switch to the Health and Care Worker visa.

Strong Benefits: Excellent pension, enhanced pay for nights and weekends, generous annual leave, and staff discounts.

Inclusive Culture: The NHS recognises overseas qualifications, provides equal opportunities, and values diversity.

The Big Mistake you are making

I see many dependents waste away in security jobs, retail jobs, housekeeping, warehousing and packaging jobs - this is a big mistake.

In the long run, you can never earn more than those in the NHS, and your work/life balance will be in shambles. You may need to work all week to earn what someone in the NHS will earn in 3 days.

Apply for NHS roles directly on TRAC or NHS Jobs, update your CV with UK keywords.

Get any entry positions like Band 2 roles as HCA or HCSW and join. In the NHS you can move into other departments or areas even like HR, Engineering, Admin at entry level and grow.

Even with a few months of experience and your care certificate, you are in the game.
