The UK government has made big changes to its immigration rules this year and will continue to roll out more changes in the months and years to come.
If you’re already in the UK—especially if you’re here on a Care Worker —this guide will help you understand what these changes mean for you and what steps you should take next.

What’s Changing?
In simple words, it is about reducing the number of migrants coming to the UK to live, settle and get citizenship hence a lot of those affect those already here—especially around settlement, dependents, and future plans.
Already on a Health and Care Visa?
Good news: Your current visa is safe.
Here’s what you can still do:
Keep working under your current visa.
Renew or extend your visa (up to at least 2028).
Switch to other visa types in the future (like Skilled Worker or Global Talent).
Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)—though this may now take 10 years, not 5.
Key Point: You’re protected, but the rules around staying long-term and bringing family are stricter.
What About Your Family?
If your spouse or children are already in the UK with you:
They can stay and extend their visas with you.
But new dependent applications under the care visa aren’t allowed anymore.
Keep your family’s visas aligned with yours and renew them on time.

Preparing for Settlement (Care Visa Holders)
The road to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship has become longer and more demanding, but it’s still achievable. With careful planning, you can stay on track and work toward a stable future in the UK. Here are the key steps to take:
1. Understand the 10-Year Rule
To qualify for ILR under the new rules (when confirmed), you must live in the UK for 10 continuous, lawful years. Time spent on valid visas—such as Student, Graduate, Health and Care, or Skilled Worker—counts towards this, but only if there are no gaps.
2. Keep All Your Documents
It’s essential to keep records that prove you’ve been living and working legally in the UK. This includes payslips, job contracts, tenancy agreements, and visa letters. When it’s time to apply for ILR, these documents will support your case and show that your stay has been continuous and compliant.
3. Improve Your English Early
The English requirement for settlement is now higher—B2 level instead of B1. If English is not your first language, begin preparing as early as possible. Don’t leave it until the last minute.
4. Track Visa Dates and Renew on Time
Always know when your visa expires. If you plan to change jobs or employers, follow the correct procedures. A mistake here can reset your 10-year ILR clock, costing you valuable time.
5. Include Your Family in the Plan
If your spouse or children are in the UK with you, their legal stay must also be continuous if they want to apply for ILR or citizenship. Make sure their visas are renewed on time and their conditions are being met. Their journey is linked to yours.
6. Get Expert Help When Needed
The new rules are more complex than before. If you’re unsure about anything—like switching visas, renewing under new rules, or including family members—speak to a qualified immigration adviser. They can guide you through the process and help you avoid costly errors.
7. Save towards your ILR and Citizenship Application
These are expensive ventures to undergo. Prepare from today to set aside something for your applications. These changes come with a huge cost.
7. After your ILR and Citizenship
Remember to begin to improve on and acquire new skills now, so that after your stay in the UK is permanent, you will be able to move on to better opportunities.
